Dish on footring. The spreading sides divided into eight panels in low relief, octagonally-lobed rim. Famille verte, decorated in various shades of green, yellow, blue, iron-red, aubergine and black enamel on the glaze. In the centre a Fo-dog with a ball and ribbons within a star-shaped panel formed by a band of single blossoms and spirals. On the eight side panels four depictions of a landscape with a lion (twice with cubs) alternating with a bird on a rock with flowering plants, among which peonies, chrysanthemums and coxcomb. On the reverse of the sides, panels with a flower spray alternating with undecorated panels. On the base a fungus (lingzhi) mark in a double circle. The Buddhist lion or Fo-dog is a common motif. It protects against evil, and even today, a pair of these lions is often placed at the entrances to temples, government offices or restaurants in China. One of the lions is a male and rests his paw on a brocade ball or Buddhist Pearl, the other is a female and has a cub under her paw. The fungus or lingzhi is a Daoist symbol of long life and immortality.
