Bowl on footring, spreading rim. The outside is covered with a light-brown glaze. Famille verte, decorated in various shades of green, yellow, aubergine, iron-red and black enamels on the glaze with a large garden rock and flowering plants. The inside is undecorated. The base is marked with an incense-burner in a double circle. Traditionally, underglaze light-brown is called ‘zeemleer’ (chamois) in The Netherlands. It is a good colour for the ground on this rather heavy, but powerfully painted representation. Ornamental rocks (taihu) with large, naturally formed holes were essential in Chinese gardens, which re-created nature in miniature. Rock such as these represent mountain ranges and all that mountains and stones symbolise.
