Dish on footring, flat rim. Famille verte, decorated in overglaze enamel colours with differing shades of green, yellow, blue, iron-red and black. In the centre a landscape with three figures watching two white oxen resting in the grass near rocks and trees. In the sky drifting clouds and a moon. On the rim four flowering prunus sprays and bamboo on a speckled ground, alternating with four lobed panels with a stylised flower and scrolls. The reverse is undecorated. This scene of three scholars and two white oxen undoubtedly has a literary connotation (unknown to the author). Oxen generally symbolise strength and spring. Such narrative representations fit comfortably into the diversity of literary themes depicted on porcelain of c. 1700.
