Plate on footring, flat rim. Famille verte, decorated in various shades of green, yellow, blue, aubergine, iron-red and black enamels on the glaze. In the centre a star-shaped panel containing a rock plateau surrounded by a fence and four deer. On the boulder in the middle a game of weiqi with two bowls containing the stones used in the game, a bench with two jugs to the right. In the background the roofs of pavilions behind a cloud-bank. On the rim eight lotus-petal shaped, partly overlapping panels with flowering plants (including lotus, chrysanthemums, carnations, peonies, prunus and orchids), birds and insects. On the reverse three flower sprays in red and green. The base is marked with an incense-burner in a double circle. The literary source of this representation is unknown to the author. The contrast between the passing deer and the recent human activity is skilfully depicted. The game of weiqi (Chinese chess, called go in Japan) and the two jugs suggest that two literati finished their wine while playing a game, wandered off to admire nature and are now having a nap beyond the frame of the picture.
