Hexagonal lobed teapot on low footring of the same shape. Flat lid with lobed rim and round, ribbed knob. Right-angled S-shaped spout, flat C-shaped handle. Kakiemon, decorated in blue, yellow, green, iron-red and black enamels with flowering poppies and chrysanthemums in the panels. Around the mouthrim a lambrequin band. On the lid flower sprays in the wavy panels. This teapot exemplifies the refinement of enamelled Kakiemon porcelain. The flowering plants have plenty of surrounding space, the execution is accomplished, the opaque colours well matched, and the details outlined in very thin black. Kakiemon teapots occur in several variations. There are also teacups and saucers, but they do not match the teapots. Such teaware was intended primarily for export. Apparently, very little Kakiemon was produced for the domestic Japanese market.
