Teapot on footring, the pear-shaped body divided by ribbing in low relief into irregularly shaped scalloped panels. Slightly curved spout, C-shaped handle. Domed and lobed lid with protruding rim and round knob. Famille rose, decorated in various shades of green, pink, yellow, blue, lilac, black and gold. In one of the large panels a sitting woman. In the other panels and on the lid peonies, carnations and other flowers. Around the foot a segmented band with diamond motifs in various enamel colours. Unlike the teapot, cat. 84, the gracious shape and fine, highly detailed decoration seen here characterise the elegant porcelain produced during the reign of Emperor Yongzheng (1723–1735). The scalloped panels are a remnant of the Kangxi period, where multiple rows of lotus-petal shaped panels stacked above each other, sometimes spiralling, were used as a basic pattern.
