Dish on footring, spreading sides. Decorated in green enamel with a curling dragon between cloud and flame motifs. The sides undecorated, a green line around the rim. On the outside two dragons. On the base in underglaze blue the six-character mark Zhengde in a double circle. Marked pieces such as this were made at factories working by appointment to the Imperial Court. Porcelain from the Zhengde period (1506–1521) maintained traditions developed in the second half of the 15th century and this piece is an elegant example. Much of this dish has been left undecorated giving the motif greater prominence. The Celestial Dragon is represented here without a flaming pearl. Only green enamel has been used without black outlines. The porcelain itself is of outstanding quality.
