Round Zhangzhou box with domed cover on low footring. Decorated in overglaze iron-red and green enamel on a diaper pattern ground. On the cover four large red medallions with green borders; on the lower part three panels, each with a schematically rendered fruit or flower and two leaves. Boxes were manufactured in great numbers for south-east Asian markets such as India, Persia and the Middle East. They contained, inter alia, cosmetics, creams and sealing wax. While by no means rare, they hardly feature in Dutch public collections. This is a fine example with its striking and decorative red circles (compare cats. 11 and 19{}).
