Beschrijving

Small jar on footring, oviform with rounded shoulder. Complete with lid with knob. Decorated in underglaze blue with lotus flowers and scrolls all over. On the shoulder a band with lambrequins alternating with half-chrysanthemums, around the foot a band with stylised lotus-petal panels. This rare jar formed part of the Chinese assortment of export porcelain of around 1500, which is confirmed by an almost identical piece salvaged from the Lena wreck, which is also heavily potted with a thick, greyish and ‘fatty’ glaze and decorated with common motifs of the time. The Lena, a Chinese junk carrying a porcelain shipment destined partly for the Middle East, was recently salvaged in The Phillippines by Frank Goddio and his team. The exact date of the shipwreck is unknown, but probably occurred sometime around 1500. It is not certain if this is the original lid.
