Bowl on footring, steep sides, scalloped rim. Kraak porcelain, decorated in underglaze blue with pomegranates alternately upright and upside-down. Inside on the base a cash motif with a spiral band within a double-scalloped edge. Around the foot a band with lotus-petal motifs. This decoration is highly unusual, no comparable examples are listed in the literature. The pomegranate symbolises happiness and because of its many seeds, fertility. In Daoist tradition, pomegranates can replace peaches as symbols of longevity. It is frequently seen as a motif on kraak porcelain.
