Baluster-shaped jar on spreading foot, wide mouthrim, high-domed lid with pointed knob. On either side a high bowed handle with a dragon’s head on the upper part. Decorated in underglaze blue with lotus flowers, flower sprays and two pointed scalloped medallions with books, scrolls and two overlapping fan-shaped panels, the foremost with a figure on a veranda. On the lid a band with lambrequins filled with a picture scroll and a weiqi board, flower sprays between. On the foot a band with striped triangles. A silver tap has been fitted close to the base on one of the sides. Apparently, this rare piece, made after a Western model, was manufactured exclusively for the Dutch for a limited period only. The few known examples, including a pair in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (Jörg & Van Campen), have mostly the same decoration; an exception is in the Duca di Martina, the ceramic museum in Naples (Caterina). Only the example in the Van Diepen Collection has been fitted with a tap in the style of Louis XV, thereby making it function as a fountain pot. The objects in the lambrequins and medallions identify the Chinese figure on the veranda as a prosperous and learned man.
