Flat plate on footring, wide flat rim. Decorated in underglaze blue. In the centre in a star-shaped panel a river scene with a large flowering plant. Around the centre, sides and rim eight circles with a flower motif, below which semicircular blue lines connect at the apex. In between small scattered flowers. On the reverse two foliate sprays. On the base a rectangular hallmark. The shape of this striking plate is evidently based on a European pewter model. At first, the decoration appears to be related to kraak porcelain because of the river scene in the star-shaped panel and the circles on the rim, but closer study reveals that it deviates from kraak in many ways. At the end of the 17th century, when exports to the West increased, Chinese potters used both the shapes and decorations of kraak porcelain as models in a contemporary way. This plate is a striking and rare example of this trend. There seem to be no comparable pieces in the literature.
