Beschrijving

Zhangzhou bowl on footring, spreading scalloped rim. Covered with a thick, irregular greyish-white glaze. Decorated in underglaze blue with a continuous representation of trees, birds, rocks, insects, flowering plants, a deer and several moons, partly contained within four large lobed panels. On the inside of the rim a band with stylised onion-shaped motifs. Inside on the base a large lotus plant and cloud motifs in a double circle. Considerable kiln-sand adhering to the glazed base. The bowl warped slightly during the firing process. This bowl is remarkable. Firstly, bowls of this size are rare in Zhangzhou ware; secondly, its rim decoration with onion(or fruit?)-shaped motifs is also rare and apparently no comparable design has been documented in the literature; thirdly, the manner in which the continuous landscape representation is broken up into four parts is also extremely rare. Usually the space between the panels is filled with a geometric (or other) pattern thereby attributing to them the function of a window. Evidently, the divisions here are intended to create some sort of rhythm in the scene. The various elements of this loosely painted representation conform to earl...
